Race Report – Napa Sprint by Andrew S
Sunday May 6, 2007.
Location: Lake Berryessa, Napa Valley
Weather: Wind, wind with some more wind thrown in for good measure. Plus SUN!
This is a great first race for the season whether you’re a beginner or seasoned veteran. Sure it clashes with Wildflower but there is a different vibe here and it’s only 2 hours from home, and you don’t need to camp!
The swim is self-seeded so you jump in whichever group you want – men & women all together – it’s that kind of race. I had a good swim (1/2 mile) but the wind caused a lot of chop and I’m sure I swallowed a good few gallons of water (extra hydration perhaps) on the way round. Quite a few people said they felt somewhat nauseous – gulp!
The bike headwinds were pretty brutal and it was a struggle going out. Of course what goes around comes around and the ride back was pretty damn fast. Bike is 15 miles.
Into the 4-mile run and you’re faced with a nasty, longish, gradual uphill early into the out & back course and again into that headwind. Still the run to the finish is more downhill than up and now the headwind is a tailwind.
All in all still a great race. Personally, I managed an Age Group podium (3rd) position as did our other TCM competitor Jeanine who came in 2nd in her AG. Way to go!!!
Andrew

Birthday Wishes - June
Happy Birthday to absolutely nobody! After May’s Birthday bonanza our parents must have rested.
Training Tips
Examined Swimming
How familiar are you with the details of your stroke? Do you have ways, in the middle of a training set, perhaps while trying to keep up in a lane-circle, to keep your awareness acute?
Check out this article by Terry Laughlin of Total Immersion Swimming at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1140 . Terry really focuses on feel in the water rather than just endless, mindless laps and drills.
